So we should start with a fact here: EVERYONE has hair on their bodies. Men and women.
I’m ok with anyone who wants to let their hair grow, but there are common methods of hair removal: shaving, waxing, and laser hair removal.
Today we are going to talk specifically about waxing because it’s the most effective method. I’m not just saying that because I’m biased as an esthetician, but I’m someone that actually gets waxed too.
If you’re anything like me, you can understand the past struggle of going through a pack of razors in a few weeks because have to shave every other day. (I caught you if you looked it up, yes you are supposed to change your razor EACH time you use it) Double the frustration if you have curly thick hair like mine too.
“Have you ever seen the 40-Year-Old Virgin?” is what first-time Brazilian clients often ask me upon entering the room followed by nervous laughter. They’re referring to the movie with actor Steve Carell infamous for its chest wax scene where Carell’s character had a seemingly not too pleasant experience.
“Yeah, where he yells out Kelly Clarkson getting his chest waxed? I have and getting waxed is nothing like that!” I respond while I follow up with instructions to doubtful faces.
So how do we go from this to a 95% rebooking rate? How do we go from this encounter to clients always saying that it wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought? Well, let’s just state another fact: it ISN’T nearly as bad as you think.
Scratch looking up Youtube videos or running to Google. Reading this article is the equivalent of googling your symptoms before you go to your primary care physician. (Sis, it’s just a cold you don’t have pneumonia)
Don’t even try asking your family and friends because they’ll just try to scare you because they think it’s funny.
SO WHAT IS A BRAZILIAN WAX?
A Brazilian wax is a type of bikini wax in which all pubic hair is removed. While a traditional bikini wax removes only the hair in areas that wouldn’t be covered by a bikini (closer to the thighs), a Brazilian wax removes the hair on every part of the pubic area (including the butt hole).
GETTING READY FOR YOUR WAX…
-You should Google places with great reviews and that uses hard wax. Soft wax is a more liquid wax and muslin strips have to be used, whereas hard wax dries around the hair to make its own strip. Soft wax also pulls on the hair and skin when being removed, while hard wax does not pull on the skin just the hair.
-You should gently exfoliate your skin a day or two before waxing, but skip harsh scrubs the day of your waxing appointment. Exfoliation helps wax grab hair and not skin, but it can also leave skin more sensitive to pain, so lighter is better.
-If you’re worried about the pain, you can take painkillers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) a little while before your appointment.
-Take a shower or clean both your vagina and make sure all traces of fecal matter are gone!
-One of the most important things you can do when getting a Brazilian wax is to make sure you’re comfortable with the person who will be working on you. Check the reviews, try to find someone with enough experience and a good bedside manner, especially for your first time. You don’t want anyone that would rough with your vagina!
WHAT NOT TO DO…
DO NOT SHAVE. You should have ¼-1/2 inch of hair grown or in comparison the length of a grain of rice. your hair has to be long enough for the wax to grab onto it.You shouldn’t get a Brazilian wax right before or during your period. When you’re on your period, your pain tolerance decreases, so it’s best to get a wax after your period. You shouldn’t get a Brazilian wax right before or after working out, because the increased blood flow could increase your pain. You shouldn’t drink before getting a Brazilian wax. Although it’s OK to have one drink to take the edge off, drinking too much can make you more likely to bleed.
WHAT TO EXPECT…
When clients come in to see me I try to do everything to make them relax. Everything smells soothing, spa music is on and the bed is already ready. Clients fill out proper forms, are educated a little about the process then they’re told undress from the waist down. I step out of the room while they get settled. This is probably the time that you should say goodbye to having hair down there as you know it, smoother skin is on the way.
Baby wipes are in reaching distance to freshen up beforehand before I return to perform the service.
I then apply oil to soften the skin and ensure no skin breakage. I prefer to wax large areas all at once. Some people think that doing smaller sections will make waxing less painful, but I think large sections aren’t actually more painful — and the whole thing is over much faster. This is the way that I was trained and everyone tells me that it’s better this way.
You can expect us to talk during your whole appointment because it’s not your normal doctor’s visit it’s girl time! We are taking care of your self-maintenance and it should feel more like you’re talking to your best friend than anything. So, in this case, it should not be awkward.
What you should not expect is to automatically scream lol. I think some people come in thinking that it’s already going to hurt so they are tense. The trick is to relax and let the esthetician concentrate on the pulling.
The first strips will be a shock but it will be easy. We start from the outside in first and work our way in. The hardest part will be the lips because the skin there is a little more sensitive but once that is done then it’s pretty much over!
Probably the part that everyone thinks is a little awkward is the buttocks and it’s because I don’t think everyone has ever had warm wax in between their cheeks lol. It’s literally the EASIEST part of the whole process! It’s 2 strips and then you’re done.
After the entirety of 15 minutes of moderate pain THEN an oil or calming lotion is applied its recommended that you put on loose clothing.
Here’s a secret: when you get home that night apply an ice cube all over your skin to close your pores and speed up the healing process.
I hope after this you can say that it wasn’t so bad at all!
